LCD OR LED TV

Of all the kinds of televisions available in today’s market, lcd or led  are amongst the most popular. In order to decide which one is right for you, it’s important that you first understand the basic differences between the two.

In general, LED TVs are the rising trend and do have some clear advantages over similar LCD TVs. The primary parameters of comparison are (1) price, (2) picture quality and (3) environmental sensitivity. What follows is a basic comparison between the two types of TVs to help you to make more informed choices about your new television set.

Price

One of the main differences between both types of TVs is the price. At the moment, LED TVs are priced about 20% more than the LCDs – however, this price difference is narrowing and will keep getting smaller. What you’re paying extra for gets translated into better value for money as well as a far superior picture quality.

Picture Quality

LED TVs use what are known as Light Emitting Diodes to produce the picture. The LEDs are a much more vibrant source of light for the television, resulting in an image that is brighter and richer in its range of colors. In LCD TVs, blacks tend to be more grayish and duller, but in LED TVs the blacks are deep and true; also, the colors are more vibrant. LED TVs have a contrast ration of up to 500,000:1, and a higher refresh rate meaning there is superior clarity especially when fast-motion content like sports, movies or games are displayed.

Environmental Sensitivity

LCD TVs use mercury in the manufacturing process, which is harmful to the environment especially when the TV is later disposed. LED TVs, on the other hand, do not use mercury, making them a better choice especially if you are environmentally conscious about the planet’s health. What’s more, an LED HDTV (high-definition television) uses, on average, about 40% less power than an LCD TV of the same size. LCD and plasma TVs use much more power, meaning that you’d pay more in utility bills each month, which adds up especially if you have more than one TV. On the environmental front, LED TVs emerge as the clear winners.

Dimensions

Both thickness and weight are significantly different in LED vs LCD TVs. Because of the LED technology, LED TVs tend to be about one-third the thickness of an LCD TV with the same screen size. As a result, LED TVs are also remarkably lighter than LCD TVs – in fact their weight can be half as much as that of an LCD TV. Moreover, the LED TV’s thinness gives you many more options as to where you can put the it, including the option of wall-mounting it.

Conclusion

Although LED TVs are priced higher than LCD TVs, looking at all the factors it is quite clear that LED TVs are a better long-term investment for the future. This emerging technology is far superior to existing LCD technology, and the price difference is only the cost of longer-term satisfaction. In a year or two, when LED TVs are the norm, you’ll probably be grateful that you paid the difference and chose an LED TV. And as an immediate effect you’re likely to prefer the better picture quality of an LED TV too. Choosing an LCD TV instead would mainly be a question of how much you’re able to spend on your TV today.
